Woe to America?
Jesus said to them, “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”
Luke 10:13
Think of the mighty deeds that God has done for America! In the relatively short time that the United States has been in existence, it has vaulted in power and wealth – and found favor with God. The founding Fathers created the country not as a theocracy, but in a form that was unprecedented at the time – a government for and by the people, with safeguards in place to discourage abuse of power and abuse of human rights. Freedom was central.
In recent decades, America (and the West in general) has fallen prey to the same mistakes as those of ancient Israel. With power and wealth came the creeping fallacy of self-sufficiency. The relevance of God and the Church has been declining. Now we are at the point where Christianity has very little influence in the mainstream culture, and we see are seeing the effects.
Anxiety, depression, and other forms of mental illness are prevalent at alarming rates. Respect for life has diminished as seen in attitudes towards abortion, elder care and inner-city murder rates. Pundits and politicians search superficially in vain for answers, but none will be found unless they are anchored in repentance, humility, and mutual respect. Until then, expect more of the same. Woe to America, indeed!
